Heavy water discharge from Maharashtra’s Ujani Reservoir has resulted in significant flooding across the Kalaburagi district in Karnataka, particularly affecting the Afzalpur and Jevargi taluks. Officials confirmed the release of approximately 3.5 lakh cusecs of water into the Bhima River, worsening the flood situation and impacting numerous villages along the river basin.

In response to the crisis, Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Tarannum visited the Mannur care centre, where she spoke with families displaced by the floods. These families expressed urgent requests for permanent housing, emphasizing their vulnerability to recurrent flooding along the Bhima River.

Widespread Damage Across Kalyana Karnataka Region

The incessant rainfall and overflowing rivers have severely disrupted daily life in the broader Kalyana Karnataka region, which includes Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Bidar, Vijayapura, Raichur, and Koppal. Extensive damage has been reported to crops, homes, and infrastructure. Large areas of farmland, particularly those growing pulses, cotton, sugarcane, and grapes, are now submerged, leading to substantial agricultural losses.

In a tragic incident in Bagalkote District, an 11-year-old boy, Darshan Nagpa Lathura, lost his life when a wall collapsed at his home in Mahalingapura. His brother sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical care. Officials also noted significant livestock losses due to the flooding.

Ongoing Relief Efforts and Community Support

Relief teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are actively engaged in evacuating residents from low-lying areas and riverbanks. The floodwaters have washed away numerous roads and bridges, complicating the logistics of relief operations.

Priyank Kharge, the district in-charge Minister for Kalaburagi, reported that 36 villages have been severely affected by the flooding. In a recent update on social media platform X, he stated, “Our top priority is people’s safety. We have opened 36 relief centres where over 1,500 people are being provided shelter and freshly cooked food.”

The district administration, supported by local volunteers, is conducting continuous operations to safeguard residents and livestock during this ongoing crisis. The commitment to community support and safety remains paramount as the region faces the challenges posed by severe weather conditions.
