Trump Criticizes Late-Night Hosts Following Kimmel’s Show Suspension
US President Donald Trump has intensified his ongoing feud with late-night television hosts, celebrating the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel‘s talk show. The cancellation came shortly after comments made by Kimmel regarding the death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, prompting government threats to revoke broadcasting licenses. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his approval of the show’s removal, labeling it “great news for America” and claiming Kimmel possesses “zero talent.”
The suspension of Kimmel’s show occurred on Wednesday, just hours after the government issued warnings concerning his remarks. Trump, not content with targeting Kimmel alone, extended his criticism to fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Stephen Colbert, all of whom have been vocal opponents of his presidency. In his post, Trump referred to them as “total losers,” asserting that Kimmel’s ratings were worse than Colbert’s, which he found hard to believe.
In a previous statement, Trump had disparaged Stephen Colbert as “talentless” following CBS’s announcement in July 2023 that it would cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after a decade on air. The frequent clashes between Trump and late-night television reflect a broader cultural divide, with comedians often critiquing Trump’s policies and actions.
On September 16, Seth Meyers addressed Trump’s foreign policy decisions during an episode of his show, likening Trump’s conditional stance on sanctions against Russia to adolescent peer pressure. He humorously remarked that Trump’s writing style resembled that of a scam email, questioning why the President communicated with “uneven grammar and syntax.” Meyers’ comments followed Trump’s announcement that he was prepared to impose sanctions against Russia for its actions in Polish airspace, contingent upon NATO’s collective agreement to halt oil purchases from Russia.
Meanwhile, on September 17, Jimmy Fallon took a lighthearted jab at Trump’s visit to the UK, suggesting that the President appreciates Britain because “when he holds a little tea sandwich, his hands look normal-sized.” Fallon also alluded to Trump’s relationship with King Charles, humorously noting their shared experience of inheritance.
These exchanges highlight the ongoing tension between Trump and late-night television, a medium that has significantly influenced public perception of his presidency. As Trump continues to engage with these comedians through social media, the dynamics of his relationship with popular culture remain a topic of interest for many.
