Trump Applauds West Point’s Decision to Cancel Hanks’ Award Ceremony

In a significant move, the West Point alumni association has canceled an award ceremony intended to honor actor Tom Hanks, prompting a reaction from former President Donald Trump. The ceremony was scheduled for September 25, 2025, where Hanks was to receive the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award, an accolade recognizing outstanding citizens for their service to the nation.
Trump expressed his approval of the cancellation on his social media platform, describing Hanks as “destructive” and “WOKE.” He stated, “Important move! We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!!” Trump also called for a review of standards at the Academy Awards and other similar ceremonies, advocating for fairness and justice in award selection.
Background on the Award and Recent Decisions
The Sylvanus Thayer Award, named after an early superintendent known as the “Father of West Point,” has been awarded annually since 1958. It honors individuals whose contributions exemplify the academy’s motto: “Duty, Honor, Country.” According to the West Point Association of Graduates, the award recognizes citizens who have significantly served the national interest.
Robert McDonald, chairman of the association’s board, praised Hanks in a press release earlier this year, highlighting his positive portrayal of American service members and contributions to veteran care and space programs. In light of the cancellation, Mark Bieger, president and CEO of the association, noted that the decision aligns with the academy’s focus on preparing cadets for military leadership. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the academy’s core mission amid external pressures.
The cancellation follows a series of changes influenced by the Trump administration regarding military and higher education policies. Recently, Secretary of the Army directed West Point to reassess its hiring practices, leading to the removal of a newly appointed cybersecurity leader and the disbandment of various cadet clubs focused on diversity.
Hanks’ Political Engagement and Response
Tom Hanks has been an active supporter of Democratic causes and candidates, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden. He narrated campaign documentaries and hosted events for Biden’s inauguration, reinforcing his political stance. Over the years, Hanks has openly criticized Trump, describing him as a “self-involved gasbag” during a 2016 interview and addressing the divisive political climate during a recent commencement speech at Harvard.
Hanks’ career includes notable works such as the acclaimed film “Saving Private Ryan” and the miniseries “Band of Brothers,” both of which reflect his commitment to portraying American service members authentically. His recent caricature of a Trump supporter during the 50th anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live” further fueled tensions between him and Trump’s base.
As the landscape of American politics and culture continues to evolve, the implications of Hanks’ canceled award ceremony and Trump’s involvement highlight the intersection of entertainment, politics, and military values. The future of awards and recognitions within this context may shift as public figures and institutions navigate these complex dynamics.
