A devastating fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa has resulted in at least 25 deaths and numerous injuries, marking one of the most tragic events in the state’s nightlife history. The incident occurred on December 6, 2023, during a live performance by Kazakhstani belly dancer Kristina Sheikh. Authorities believe that the fire may have been ignited by electric firecrackers or a short circuit, as thick smoke rapidly filled the venue, trapping many attendees inside.

Most victims succumbed to suffocation after being unable to escape to safety. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as patrons attempted to flee the nightclub while emergency services rushed to the scene. The Goa Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, stated that early investigations indicated serious violations of fire safety regulations at the establishment.

Police have since arrested five individuals linked to the club, including senior staff members. A look-out notice has also been issued for the nightclub’s owners, who are currently unaccounted for. In a related legal development, the owners, identified as the Luthra brothers, have sought anticipatory bail from the Rohini Court.

Kristina Sheikh’s Experience During the Fire

Kristina Sheikh, a well-known performer with a significant following on social media, recounted her harrowing experience during the fire. She was in the midst of her performance when she noticed sparks and heard the music abruptly stop. Panic set in as smoke filled the room, leading her to initially move towards the green room.

In a fortunate turn of events, a crew member warned her that the green room was already engulfed in flames. Grateful for the warning, Kristina described the crew member as an “Indian god” for guiding her away from imminent danger. “I am thankful to be alive,” she shared with the media, visibly shaken from the traumatic experience.

Authorities later revealed that Kristina did not possess a valid business visa for her performance in India. A senior officer from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) confirmed that she had applied for a visa, but it had not yet been approved.

Aftermath and Community Response

The fire has prompted widespread grief and concern in Goa, with many calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in nightlife venues. Survivors and family members of the victims are demanding accountability and justice. The incident has drawn attention not only to safety compliance but also to the broader implications for entertainers working in foreign countries without appropriate documentation.

As investigations continue, the impact of this tragedy resonates deeply within the community, drawing both national and international focus. The loss of life in such a sudden and horrifying manner has left an indelible mark on the region, raising questions about safety in entertainment venues everywhere.

The local government is expected to release further updates as the investigation progresses, while the community mourns the lives lost in this preventable disaster.
