Thanksgiving Travel Faces Delays Amid Severe Weather Forecasts
Severe weather is anticipated across the United States this Thanksgiving, with conditions likely to disrupt travel plans. A mix of heavy rain, wintry storms, and a significant cold front is set to impact various regions, raising concerns about travel delays and hazardous conditions.
Forecast Overview
Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on November 23, 2023, will see a cold front sweep from the Great Lakes to the East Coast. States like Delaware are expected to experience a dramatic temperature drop, transitioning from unseasonably warm conditions to chilly morning temperatures in the mid-30s Fahrenheit. According to The Washington Post, many areas in the northern and central U.S. will face a combination of snow, rain, and cold, with some regions already under warnings for snow or rain.
In the Midwest, particularly around the Great Lakes and upper Plains, heavy snow is likely due to “lake-effect snow.” AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham warned of “substantial blowing and drifting snow” in parts of Minnesota and northern Michigan. A significant blizzard may develop near Lake Superior, leading to treacherous travel conditions.
Conversely, the South and Southwest regions are expected to enjoy milder weather, with some coastal and southern states potentially experiencing pleasant, rain-free conditions.
Travel Impact
As of November 22, 2023, more than 1,100 flights across the U.S. have already been delayed or disrupted due to the winter storm affecting the Upper Midwest, according to FlightAware. Major cities such as Minneapolis, Chicago, and Cleveland are anticipated to experience travel delays on Thanksgiving Eve.
AccuWeather has issued warnings for motorists, advising caution due to slippery, snow-covered roads in the Midwest and wind-driven rain in the South. The Pacific Northwest is also expecting mountain snow hazards. The forecast indicates that several inches of snow could impact travel along major interstates, including 81, 90, and 196, particularly within persistent snow bands.
These conditions may quickly reduce visibility and complicate travel, with temperatures expected to hover in the 20s and 30s Fahrenheit in affected areas. The National Weather Service has urged travelers to remain vigilant and plan accordingly as they navigate potentially hazardous conditions this holiday season.
As families prepare to gather for Thanksgiving, staying informed about the weather and travel updates is essential for ensuring safe journeys.
