Strong Earthquakes Shake Northern Venezuela, No Immediate Casualties Reported
A powerful earthquake registering at 6.3 magnitude struck western and northern Venezuela on November 1, 2023, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Hours later, a second quake followed, measuring 5.8 magnitude. The tremors caused widespread alarm, with reports indicating that people shopping for groceries rushed for cover as items fell from store shelves.
The epicenter of the initial quake was located at a depth of 14 kilometers, approximately 27 kilometers from the oil town of Mene Grande in Zulia State. This area is situated nearly 600 kilometers west of Caracas and is characterized by its low population density. The Colombian Geological Survey reported a slightly lower magnitude of 6.1 for the quake, categorizing it as a shallow event.
The tremors were felt not only across Venezuela but also reached areas in Colombia and the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire. According to a report by Deutsch Welle, local residents experienced significant shaking, prompting immediate evacuations.
Despite the intensity of the earthquakes, authorities have not reported any immediate casualties or major structural damage. However, video footage shared online depicted scenes of panic as shoppers hurried to safety. One video, attributed to the risk management consulting firm ESPICIGEST, showed damage to a church’s spire, highlighting the potential impact of the seismic activity.
In the hours following the initial quake, the USGS confirmed the occurrence of the second tremor, which struck approximately 28 kilometers from the original epicenter. As the situation unfolds, local authorities are likely assessing the extent of the damage and coordinating response efforts.
The seismic events in Venezuela serve as a reminder of the region’s geological volatility. Earthquakes of this magnitude can pose significant risks to infrastructure and public safety, necessitating immediate preparedness and response measures.
As reports continue to emerge, both local and international agencies will monitor the situation closely to provide updates regarding any potential aftershocks or further seismic activity.
