Nobel Laureate Maria Corina Machado Calls for Democratic Defense
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado emphasized the necessity for democracies to fight for freedom during a ceremony in Oslo on October 25, 2023. Unable to attend due to a travel ban imposed by the Venezuelan government, Machado’s daughter, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, delivered the poignant message on her behalf. Machado highlighted the award’s significance not only for Venezuela but for the global community, asserting, “It reminds the world that democracy is essential to peace.”
A large portrait of Machado adorned the stage at Oslo City Hall, drawing applause from attendees as Joergen Watne Frydnes, head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announced her recognition. He referenced past laureates like Nelson Mandela and Lech Walesa, noting the unrealistic expectations placed on champions of democracy. Frydnes stated, “Activist leaders must confront and resolve dilemmas that we onlookers are free to ignore,” underscoring the complexities faced by those striving for democratic governance.
Machado, a former engineer and prominent opposition leader, was due to receive the award in the presence of King Harald. She has been in hiding for over a year, having faced intensified repression against opposition figures in Venezuela. Although she indicated her intention to attend, an audio recording revealed uncertainty about her arrival in Oslo. “I will be in Oslo, I am on my way to Oslo right now,” she stated, with Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, confirming her potential delayed arrival.
The essence of Machado’s message spoke to the ongoing struggle for freedom in Venezuela and beyond. “Freedom is a choice that must be renewed each day,” she declared. “A people who choose freedom contribute not only to themselves, but to humanity.” Her remarks resonated with the audience, highlighting the universal fight against authoritarianism.
Reflecting on Venezuela’s political landscape, Machado expressed regret that many citizens did not recognize the erosion of democratic institutions in time. She referred to the late president Hugo Chavez, who rose to power in 1999, stating, “Many thought that charisma could substitute the rule of law.” She argued that since then, the regime has systematically dismantled democracy in Venezuela.
Machado’s situation exemplifies the broader challenges faced by opposition leaders in authoritarian regimes. Currently, Nicolas Maduro remains in power, having declared victory in the controversial 2024 presidential election, which many, including international observers, contest. Despite winning the opposition primary by a significant margin, Machado was barred from participating and subsequently went into hiding as repression escalated.
The political tension in Venezuela has drawn international scrutiny, particularly from the United States. Machado has allied herself with figures close to former President Donald Trump, who asserted that Maduro’s regime poses a threat to U.S. national security. In recent months, the Trump administration has conducted military strikes targeting alleged drug-trafficking activities off Latin America’s coast, sparking condemnation from human rights groups and some political factions for being unlawful.
As Machado’s daughter accepted the Peace Prize, the event underscored the importance of international support for democratic movements. Her call for vigilance in defending freedom resonates not only with Venezuelans but also with those around the world who strive for democratic governance and human rights. The ceremony served as a stark reminder that the fight for democracy is ongoing and requires dedication and courage from all who value freedom.
