New Book Explores Indian IAS Aspirations and Administrative Realities

A new fictional book titled “Fractured Wings of the Golden Bird” offers a thought-provoking exploration of the Indian administrative landscape. Written by H P Kumar, who has extensive experience in finance, governance, and public service, the book delves into the journey of an IAS couple as they navigate the complexities of public service in India.
Set against the backdrop of a highly competitive civil services examination process, the narrative follows the lives of Satyanand and Mira, two idealistic IAS officers whose commitment to serving their nation is challenged by the intricacies of the administrative system. The book raises critical questions about the sacrifices made by countless youths who dedicate years of their lives to prepare for the IAS exams. Each year, a significant number of candidates compete for a limited number of vacancies, leading to intense pressure and emotional strain.
Examining the IAS Dream
Kumar’s work does not shy away from addressing the harsh realities of this dream. It poses the question: “What is the cost of chasing the IAS dream?” The book encourages readers to reflect on the broader societal implications of this relentless pursuit. It highlights the urgent need to channel young talent into diverse and productive avenues beyond the IAS, suggesting alternative models for employment creation in both rural and urban settings.
Amidst the struggles faced by the protagonists, the author emphasizes the importance of ethics and morality as foundational elements for a disciplined and prosperous society. As Satyanand and Mira confront systemic constraints, the narrative poignantly illustrates the delicate balance between personal values and the demands of public service.
The book was officially launched in New Delhi on September 13, 2023, by M M Kumar, the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. This event marks a significant moment for those interested in the intersections of governance, ethics, and the aspirations of India’s youth.
Kumar’s insights and storytelling serve as a reminder of the emotional and ethical dimensions of governance, urging readers to consider the profound impact of civil service aspirations on individuals and society as a whole.
