Nepal Swears in New Ministers Amid Mourning for Protest Victims

Nepal’s interim government welcomed three new ministers on March 11, 2024, during a ceremony at the presidential residence, Sheetal Niwas. This event comes in the wake of ongoing national mourning for students who lost their lives in recent protests. The newly appointed ministers have emphasized the urgent need for a government free from corruption, reflecting the demands of the youth and particularly Generation Z.
Om Prakash Aryal was sworn in as the Minister of Home and Legal Affairs, while Rajeshore Khanal took on the role of Finance Minister, and Kulwant Ghising assumed the position of Minister for Transport, Urban Planning and Physical Infrastructure. The oath was administered by Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel.
During their initial remarks, the ministers described their new offices in Singha Durbar as resembling a war zone, a stark indication of the recent unrest. Khanal specifically likened the chaotic state of the offices to scenes from movies, highlighting the need for immediate action to restore order and functionality. He stated, “The youth have sacrificed their lives in this agitation for a corruption-free Nepal.”
The interim government, led by Karki, is now faced with the challenge of managing a mass funeral procession for at least ten students who were declared martyrs following their deaths during the protests. The funeral, initially scheduled for March 11, has been postponed to March 12 to allow for proper arrangements. Families of the deceased, including that of Madhav Saru, have expressed their grief and the logistical difficulties they face as they prepare to honor their loved ones.
Khanal underscored the responsibility the new government has towards the youth, who have actively called for reforms. He indicated that action would be taken against those who misuse public funds, stating, “This is not my personal agenda. This is a national agenda entrusted to us by Gen Z.”
In addition to Khanal’s urgent call for a corruption-free government, Ghising addressed the need for collective effort in rebuilding the country from the damage inflicted during the protests. He urged every citizen to contribute to recovery efforts, promising that funds would be used effectively.
As the newly appointed ministers settle into their roles, Aryal, now the home minister, has pledged to ensure fair elections, emphasizing the importance of supportive governance. He remarked, “The government of the day should play the role of a mother,” signaling a commitment to nurturing the democratic process.
With the nation in mourning and the new administration facing immediate scrutiny, the coming weeks will be critical for the Karki government as it navigates the challenges ahead while responding to the aspirations of its citizens.
