Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Granddaughter in Tripura

A tragic incident unfolded in North Tripura, where Jaynal Uddin, a 40-year-old man, has been arrested on charges of murdering his 14-month-old granddaughter. The incident occurred in the Padmabil area of the Panisagar sub-division, with police seeking custody of Uddin following his presentation in court on March 15, 2024.

The events leading up to the arrest took place late on the evening of March 9, when Uddin took the child for what he claimed would be a brief walk. After three hours passed without her return, her parents grew increasingly concerned and raised the alarm. Community members quickly joined the search for the child, but initial efforts failed to yield any results.

As tensions mounted, family members intensified their own search efforts before contacting the police, according to Rahul Balhera, the sub-divisional police officer of Panisagar. Balhera stated, “A police team and local residents resumed the search later that evening. Around midnight, we refocused our efforts and unfortunately discovered the infant’s body buried in a paddy field.”

Following the grim discovery, the authorities sent the body for a post-mortem examination and dispatched a forensic team to the scene to gather evidence. An official complaint was registered, which initiated a manhunt for Uddin.

“Our team mobilised all resources and, by last evening, successfully apprehended the accused in Nilambazar, Assam. He has admitted to the crime,” Balhera confirmed.

As investigations continue, police are now seeking custody of Uddin to ascertain the motive behind this heartbreaking act. The community remains in shock over the incident, highlighting the profound impact of such a tragedy on local residents.
