Jharkhand Police Heighten Security Amid Maoist Bandh Call
Jharkhand Police have heightened security measures across the state in response to a bandh called by Maoists following the recent death of Vivek alias Karam Kranti, a central committee member, and seven others during a confrontation with security forces in the Luggu hills of Bokaro on April 21. The bandh is set to impact not only Jharkhand but also neighboring states including Bihar, North Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Assam.
Increased Vigilance and Operations
Police sources indicate that intelligence gathering is underway, alongside area domination operations in sensitive regions. Increased vigilance is being implemented at public and strategic installations to deter any potential unrest. Inspector General of Operations, Michal Raj, stated, “Police are on high alert to prevent violence in view of the Maoists’ bandh.” He emphasized that while the Maoist influence has significantly diminished in the state, their concentration remains in the Chaibasa-Saranda area.
Officials from the Railway Police Force have also reported ongoing surveillance of railway properties, including tracks, to safeguard against any disruptions. The Maoist presence is noted in areas such as Palamu, Latehar, and along the Hazaribag-Bokaro border. Senior Maoist leaders, including politburo member Misir Besra and central committee members Asim Mandal and Anal Da, are believed to be active in the Saranda region, while another central committee member, Shahdeo, is reportedly located near the Hazaribag-Bokaro border.
Community Preparedness and Response
Local communities are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities. The police presence is expected to remain heightened in the coming days, particularly in areas identified as potential flashpoints for violence. As the situation develops, police will continue to monitor and adapt their strategies to ensure public safety and order.
This bandh represents a significant moment in Jharkhand’s ongoing struggle with Maoist insurgency, reflecting both the challenges and progress made in addressing violence in the region. The police response underscores a commitment to maintaining peace during this period of potential unrest.
