Israeli forces have reportedly killed dozens of individuals across Gaza, intensifying their military operations in the region. According to Gaza’s civil defence agency, airstrikes on Wednesday resulted in at least 40 fatalities, including women and children, as the military continues its assault on Gaza City. The ongoing conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands, creating a dire humanitarian situation.

The United Nations estimated that approximately one million people were residing in Gaza City and its surrounding areas as of late August 2023. The conflict has forced around 550,000 individuals to flee south, according to the Israeli military, while Gaza’s civil defence agency estimates the number to be around 450,000. With limited resources and infrastructure, many families are struggling to find temporary shelter.

Thaer Saqr, a 39-year-old resident, described his harrowing escape from the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City, where his sister was killed by tank fire. “I appeal to the world: help us,” he told AFP. “I say to Israel: you want us to evacuate, but how can we when we have no shekels, no transportation, and no place?”

The civil defence agency reported that three airstrikes targeting a warehouse sheltering displaced individuals near the Firas market resulted in 22 deaths, among them six women and nine children. The agency’s spokesman, Mahmud Bassal, expressed concern over the mounting casualties. When approached for comment, the Israeli military stated it was “looking into it,” but media restrictions in Gaza complicate independent verification of the events.

Eyewitness accounts highlight the devastation. Footage from the aftermath captured Palestinians sifting through debris, searching for survivors, while others mourned over the bodies of their loved ones. Mohammed Hajjaj, who lost family members in the airstrikes, described the scene as “pitiful.”

The Israeli military launched its ground offensive on Gaza City earlier in September, aiming to dismantle the power of the Palestinian Islamist movement, Hamas. The military has urged residents to relocate to designated humanitarian areas in the southern coastal region of Al-Mawasi. While initially declared a safe zone, repeated strikes have occurred in this area, as Israel claims to target Hamas.

Another resident, Mahmud al-Dreimly, recounted his experience of fleeing with his family to a tent in Gaza City’s Al-Rimal neighbourhood. “I felt death was near,” he stated, having witnessed tanks firing into the air and at civilians.

The ongoing conflict has drawn international concern, particularly following a UN investigation that accused Israel of committing acts of “genocide” in Gaza. Israel has categorically rejected these findings, labelling the report as “distorted and false.”

The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reports that Israeli military operations over the past two years have led to the deaths of at least 65,419 Palestinians, predominantly civilians. These figures are recognized as reliable by the United Nations, underscoring the critical humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

As the conflict escalates, the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and international intervention becomes increasingly apparent.
