Imperial College London Rejects Claims of Lahore Campus Opening

Imperial College London has firmly denied recent claims made by the Punjab government in Pakistan regarding the establishment of a new campus in Lahore. The university’s statement comes in response to an announcement from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on October 18, 2023, which suggested that a campus would be opened in Nawaz Sharif IT City.
Announcement and Controversy
The PML-N’s announcement was made through its official account on X, asserting that the foundation stone for the Lahore campus would be laid in November. The post also mentioned plans for a modern 300-bed hospital as part of the development. Following widespread sharing on social media, the post was deleted shortly thereafter.
Maryam Nawaz, the Chief Minister of Punjab, had previously launched the Nawaz Sharif IT City project in May last year. She highlighted the project as a significant commercial initiative, noting that several international technology companies had shown interest. Reports indicated that up to ten firms were preparing to establish offices within the 853-acre tax-free zone, which offers a 10-year tax exemption to businesses.
Imperial College’s Response
In a swift rebuttal, Imperial College London issued a statement on October 24, 2023, categorically denying any plans to open a campus outside the United Kingdom. The university stated, “Reports that Imperial College London plans to open a campus overseas are incorrect.” It further clarified, “There have been erroneous reports in the media and online that Imperial is opening a campus at Nawaz Sharif IT City in Lahore, Pakistan. Imperial has no such plans, with all the university’s campuses based in the UK.”
The university emphasized the importance for potential students and the public to rely on official communications from Imperial College for accurate information regarding any future developments.
This incident highlights the challenges associated with misinformation in the digital age, particularly regarding international educational institutions. As the global demand for higher education continues to grow, clarity and accurate reporting become increasingly essential.
