Delhi Couple Denied Entry for Indian Attire Sparks Outcry

A couple in Delhi has alleged that they were denied entry into a local restaurant due to their Indian attire, igniting controversy and prompting a swift response from city officials. The incident, which took place at a restaurant in Pitampura, was captured on video and quickly gained traction on social media platforms.
In the footage, the couple recounts their experience, claiming that while they were turned away, other patrons dressed differently were allowed inside. The person recording the video vocally criticized the restaurant’s policy, suggesting that it had no right to operate under such discriminatory practices.
Delhi cabinet minister Kapil Mishra publicly condemned the incident, describing it as “unacceptable” and stating that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had been informed. Mishra took to the microblogging site X to express his disapproval, saying, “This is unacceptable in Delhi. A video has surfaced showing a ban on Indian attire at a restaurant in Pitampura. CM @gupta_rekhaji has taken serious note of the incident. Officials have been directed to investigate the incident and take immediate action.”
In a follow-up post, Mishra provided an update on the situation, announcing that the restaurant owners had agreed not to impose any restrictions based on attire in the future. He added, “The operators of this Pitampura restaurant have accepted that they will no longer impose any restrictions based on attire and will welcome citizens coming in Indian attire. On Rakshabandhan, they will also offer some discounts to sisters coming in Indian attire.”
The couple’s experience has sparked broader discussions about inclusivity and respect for cultural attire in public spaces. As public sentiment continues to evolve, the actions taken by the restaurant and local officials may serve as a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
As investigations proceed, the incident underscores the importance of fostering an environment where all individuals feel welcome, regardless of their clothing choices.
