Cyprus Speaker Annita Demetriou Praises PM Modi, Seeks Stronger Ties
During a recent visit to India, Annita Demetriou, the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, expressed her admiration for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as a “spiritual leader.” This visit came as part of efforts to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two democracies, with a focus on expanding cooperation beyond traditional sectors.
Demetriou’s itinerary included meetings with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. She highlighted the significance of PM Modi’s “historic” visit to the Green Line, the UN-administered buffer zone that divides Cyprus, marking India’s endorsement of Cyprus’s sovereignty amidst ongoing Turkish occupation since 1974.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
In an exclusive interview, Demetriou noted that her visit underscores the long-standing friendship between Cyprus and India. She emphasized the importance of building on this relationship, stating, “Now it is time to upscale and improve our relationship further.”
Both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to the Joint Action Plan (2025-2029), which aims to leverage Cyprus’s strategic position as a gateway to the European Union and India’s expanding global influence. Demetriou remarked, “We believe we can further our relationship in sectors like connectivity, trade, shipping, and safety.”
When discussing the recent high-level visits, she mentioned the significance of Modi’s gesture at the Green Line, stating, “It was a historic moment. He saw firsthand what it means to have ongoing violations of human rights and international law.” This visit resonated deeply with the Cypriot people, as they continue to seek a resolution to the division of their country.
Emphasizing Cultural Ties
Demetriou also reflected on her experiences during the visit, noting the warmth and hospitality of the Indian people. She shared her impressions of India, stating, “We love India and are really impressed by the hospitality and warmth of the people.” The delegation took the opportunity to explore India’s rich cultural heritage, including visits to the Taj Mahal and other significant monuments.
In her views on PM Modi’s leadership, she praised his approach, stating, “He has been leading the country for over a decade. In recent years, India has been progressing well, and it’s important for the people to experience this in their daily lives.” Demetriou believes that the collaboration between Cyprus and India can flourish under Modi’s guidance and vision for international relations.
As both nations continue to explore avenues for cooperation, Demetriou’s visit marks a pivotal step towards enhancing mutual understanding and partnership. With a shared commitment to democratic values, Cyprus and India are positioned to navigate complex global challenges together, fostering peace and stability in their regions and beyond.
