Cloudburst Devastates Naugaon Area in Uttarkashi, No Casualties Reported

A significant cloudburst struck the Naugaon area in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on September 6, 2023, resulting in extensive damage but, fortunately, no reported loss of life. The incident occurred in the evening at Syori Phal Patti, where debris from a flooded stream buried a residential house. In addition, muddy waters inundated more than half a dozen homes, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
District Magistrate Prashant Arya reported that the cloudburst caused sludge from the Devalsari stream to rush into low-lying areas, severely impacting the community. The district administration, along with state and national disaster response forces, initiated a rescue operation to assist those affected. People were evacuated to safer locations as a precautionary measure.
As the cloudburst occurred, many residents had already left their homes, anticipating the dangers of heavy rains. Reports indicate that a mixer machine and several two-wheelers were swept away by the swollen stream. Additionally, a car was buried under the debris, causing further complications in the aftermath.
Rescue Operations Underway
The Naugaon market area experienced chaos as a mudslide disrupted daily activities, forcing individuals to scramble for safety. The Delhi-Yamunotri highway was also closed due to the incident, leading to significant traffic congestion.
A team from the State Disaster Response Force, led by Barkot Inspector Rajesh Joshi, quickly arrived at the scene to facilitate rescue and relief efforts. Local authorities worked diligently to evacuate residents and provide immediate assistance.
In a statement on social media, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his concern regarding the damage caused by the heavy rains in Naugaon. He stated, “On receiving information about the damage caused by heavy rains in Naugaon area of Uttarkashi district, I immediately spoke to the district magistrate and directed him to conduct rescue and relief operations on a war-footing.” He emphasized the need for swift action to ensure the safety of affected residents.
The ongoing response efforts highlight the community’s resilience in the face of adverse weather conditions. Local authorities are committed to providing all necessary support to residents impacted by this natural disaster. As the situation develops, residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow guidance from emergency services.
