Chess Community Shocked by Daniel Naroditsky’s Untimely Death at 29

Daniel Naroditsky, an accomplished American chess grandmaster, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 29. His death was confirmed by the Charlotte Chess Center on October 20, 2025. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, leaving many in the chess community searching for answers.
Born in San Mateo, California, Naroditsky demonstrated exceptional talent from a young age, learning chess from his father at just six years old. He achieved the title of grandmaster at the age of 17 and most recently won the US National Blitz Championship. His family released a heartfelt statement through the Charlotte Chess Center, describing him as a “talented chess player, commentator, and educator” who was “cherished by fans and players around the world.”
Chilling Final Video Raises Questions
Just days before his death, Naroditsky uploaded a video to his YouTube channel titled “You Thought I Was Gone!?” This was his first video in three months and featured him returning to live chess matches while speaking enthusiastically about his experiences. He stated, “You thought I was gone forever, but now I’m back and better than ever,” showcasing his engaging personality and passion for the game.
Despite the upbeat tone of the video, some viewers expressed concern over his demeanor during the livestream. Comments on social media revealed that fans noted signs of distress, with one viewer stating, “He seemed to be having a bit of a mental break.” This has led to speculation regarding his mental health leading up to his death.
Reports suggest that Naroditsky was discovered deceased by fellow chess player Olexandr Bortnyk. As the details of his passing remain sparse, the chess community is grappling with shock and sorrow.
Concerns About Foul Play
Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik has publicly questioned the circumstances surrounding Naroditsky’s death. In a post on his social media, he stated, “What exactly happened? To those who prefer blaming and shaming instead of helping: awful tragedy. I hope it is properly investigated.” Kramnik’s comments have added to the growing unease among fans and peers, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.
Naroditsky’s contributions to chess extended beyond competition. He was recognized for his ability to make chess accessible to a broader audience through his online teaching and commentary. His influence has inspired countless players and enthusiasts around the world.
As the chess community mourns the loss of a gifted player and educator, many are left pondering the circumstances of his death, seeking understanding and closure in the face of this tragic event.
