After Two Years Apart, Arbel and Ariel Reunite in Joy

On October 7, 2023, the lives of many were irrevocably changed during a violent attack by Hamas on Kibbutz Nir-Oz, an agricultural community near the Gaza border. After more than two years of uncertainty and separation, Arbel Yehoud and Ariel Cunio embraced once again on Monday, marking a poignant reunion filled with emotion. Both had been held hostage during the attack, and their embrace signifies not only personal relief but also a story of resilience amid tragedy.
Yehoud, overwhelmed with joy, expressed her feelings in a statement from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters. “My Ariel is home again, and I am overwhelmed with emotion and joy. For over two years, the hope of holding Ariel again is what sustained and drove me every single day,” she said. Cunio, now 28, was one of only four remaining hostages from Nir-Oz to be released.
Community Impact and Personal Stories
The October attacks devastated Nir-Oz, where over a quarter of its 400 residents experienced loss, either through death or abduction. The community remains scarred, yet hope persisted throughout the ordeal. Cunio was freed alongside his brother, David Cunio, who returned to his wife, Sharon Cunio, and their three-year-old twin daughters, Yuli and Emma, in a ceasefire agreement in November 2023.
Yehoud had herself been released earlier in January as part of a separate ceasefire arrangement. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized, “We must not relent until the last hostage comes home. Only then can we heal as a society and as a people.” Her words resonate deeply within the larger context of the ongoing conflict.
Emotional Reunions Beyond Nir-Oz
Another heart-wrenching reunion occurred when Avinatan Or returned to his parents, Yaron and Ditsa, at the Rei’m military facility in southern Israel. Video footage released by the Israeli military captured Or’s emotional embrace with his parents, showcasing the relief that comes with the end of a long ordeal. “How much I hoped I would get the chance to tell you that I love you and to see you one more time in this life,” the 29-year-old said, having also been freed from captivity.
Or reunited with his girlfriend, Noa Argamani, who had been captured during the same attack at the Nova music festival. Their story gained international attention when footage of Argamani’s abduction circulated widely online. She was rescued in June 2024 through an Israeli military operation in central Gaza. Despite the separation, their bond remained unbroken, as Argamani expressed on social media, “I miss Avinatan more with every passing day. I hold onto hope, every single day, that this nightmare will end soon, and we will finally get to live the life we have dreamed of.”
The reunions of Arbel and Ariel, along with Avinatan and Noa, highlight a powerful narrative of love enduring through the darkest times. Their stories serve as a reminder that even amid profound loss and uncertainty, hope and connection can survive, ultimately leading to moments of joy.
