Afghan Commerce and Industry Minister Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi has announced plans to enhance bilateral trade between Afghanistan and India, aiming to exceed the current value of USD 1 billion. This statement was made during a press interaction at the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi on November 24, where Azizi discussed the arrival of a commercial attaché from Afghanistan, expected to take place within a month.

Trade Initiatives and Visa Resolutions

During his visit to India, Azizi emphasized the mutual interest in fostering private investment. He highlighted that discussions included vital topics such as commercial and medical visa processes, trade transit corridors, and the strategic Chabahar port. He mentioned the intention to explore additional trade routes with India through neighboring countries like Iran and Pakistan, despite challenges posed by the closure of the Attari-Wagah border.

On the visa front, Azizi confirmed that the issue of travel for Afghan businessmen has been addressed, allowing them to apply for visas through the Indian Embassy in Kabul. He also announced the resumption of medical visas, which previously enabled Afghan citizens to seek treatment in India. This service, which was disrupted following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, is set to restore access to Indian healthcare facilities.

Investment Opportunities and Trade Agreements

Azizi extended an invitation to Indian businesses, encouraging them to invest in Afghanistan, particularly in sectors such as mining, agriculture, healthcare, information technology, energy, and textiles. He pledged a supportive business environment, including potential tax exemptions for investments in new sectors, specifically offering five years of tax breaks for companies engaged in gold mining.

At a session organized by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Azizi acknowledged the trade challenges stemming from regional tensions, particularly with Pakistan. He emphasized the significant investment potential in Afghanistan, asserting that the country offers less competition and favorable tariff conditions for foreign investors.

Furthermore, Azizi noted that the establishment of a joint chamber of commerce is planned to strengthen cooperation between the private sectors of both nations. The Afghan minister’s visit, which included meetings with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada, marks a significant step towards revitalizing trade relations.

As Afghanistan positions itself to enhance its economic ties with India, both nations are optimistic about the future of their partnership, with the aim of not only maintaining but significantly increasing their trade volume in the near future.
