The opposition party YSRC has launched protests against alleged restrictions imposed on its leaders as preparations intensify for the visit of party president and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to the Nellore Central Jail on March 14, 2024. Reddy is expected to meet remanded party leader and former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy. Senior party leader Bhumana Karunakar Reddy expressed concerns over the treatment of YSRC members, claiming they are being threatened with legal action and facing limitations on public gatherings.

During a press conference in Tirupati, Karunakar Reddy questioned the state of democracy in the region, stating, “Is this a democracy or a dictatorship?” He emphasized that Jagan Mohan Reddy enjoys widespread support and that citizens gather voluntarily to see him.

Former Member of Parliament Gorantla Madhav also criticized the police’s actions, urging law enforcement to adhere to established protocols rather than responding to political pressures. He alleged that police have threatened to label YSRC leaders as rowdies if they attend Reddy’s meeting, echoing concerns about the treatment of political opposition in Andhra Pradesh.

Madhav further called for adequate protection for Jagan Mohan Reddy during his visit, contrasting it with the inadequate security provided during a previous visit to Guntur. He insisted that police must ensure a safe environment for the meeting with party leaders Govardhan Reddy and N. Prasanna Kumar Reddy.

Concerns Over Governance and Political Suppression

In addition to the protests, YSRC MP Maddila Gurumoorthy raised the issue of political suppression during a session in the Lok Sabha. He highlighted the arrest of YSRC Lok Sabha floor leader P.V. Midhun Reddy, asserting that such incidents are part of a troubling trend aimed at quelling dissent in Andhra Pradesh.

Gurumoorthy described these actions as alarming, stating they contradict the essential principles of justice and democratic governance. He urged Parliament to address these developments, warning against the potential for political power to undermine the rule of law.

As the YSRC continues to express its grievances, the party is also challenging the policies of the ruling NDA government. Karunakar Reddy criticized the government’s P4 (People-Public-Private-Partnership for Poor) initiative, labeling it as a shift from effective governance to mere philanthropy. He suggested that if former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu genuinely seeks to assist the impoverished, he should utilize his resources to support the identified 20 lakh families under the initiative rather than imposing arbitrary targets on the administration.

The unfolding events reflect the growing tension in Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape and raise significant questions about the state of democratic practices in the region. As the YSRC prepares for Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit, the protests indicate a deepening divide between the opposition party and the state authorities.
