VS Achuthanandan Makes Historic Pilgrimage to Sabarimala Hills
On December 30, 2007, VS Achuthanandan, the former Chief Minister of Kerala, made history by becoming the first communist chief minister to ascend the revered hills of Sabarimala. His visit to the sacred shrine was marked by a traditional vedi vazhipadu, a ritualistic invocation, celebrating his long life and contributions. This significant event not only highlighted Achuthanandan’s commitment to his faith but also his dedication to the welfare of the pilgrims.
A Historic Climb and Hospital Inauguration
At the age of 84, Achuthanandan began his ascent at approximately 17:45, joining a throng of pilgrims making the challenging journey. He arrived at Sannidhanam, the base camp for the Sabarimala shrine, shortly after 20:00. The climb was not merely a personal pilgrimage; it served a dual purpose. Achuthanandan was also present to inaugurate a new 20-bed hospital designed to address the medical needs of the thousands of devotees visiting the site.
During the climb, Achuthanandan demonstrated remarkable determination. Despite suggestions from companions, including Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy and local MLAs K. C. Rajagopalan and Raju Abraham, to take breaks, he persistently replied, “Don’t try to make me sit down.” His resolve resonated with many present, showcasing his unwavering spirit even at an advanced age.
Community Response and Legacy
The atmosphere at the temple was filled with a mix of reverence and light-heartedness, as those gathered chuckled when the loudspeakers announced the vedi vazhipadu for Achuthanandan’s longevity. This moment encapsulated the joy and communal spirit surrounding the event, drawing attention to the intersection of politics and spirituality in Kerala.
The following day, Achuthanandan made the return journey down the hill, marking a significant chapter in his political and personal journey. His pilgrimage to Sabarimala not only reinforced his connection with the religious community but also highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges faced by pilgrims.
Achuthanandan’s visit to Sabarimala remains a memorable event in Kerala’s political history, illustrating the profound relationship between leaders and their constituents. As the community continues to reflect on this moment, the legacy of his climb serves as a reminder of commitment to service and the enduring spirit of faith.
