During his recent visit to the UK, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a memorable moment with entrepreneur Akhil Patel, who served him masala chai at Chequers, the official countryside residence of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The encounter highlighted the cultural significance of tea while reinforcing the ties between India and the UK. A widely circulated photo captured the moment, showcasing Patel serving the traditional beverage with the light-hearted remark, “From one chaiwala to another.”
The interaction took place on July 24, 2025, as part of a gathering aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations. Modi later posted on social media, stating, “‘Chai Pe Charcha’ with PM Keir Starmer at Chequers… brewing stronger India-UK ties!” The event exemplifies how cultural exchanges can foster international connections.
Akhil Patel: From Student to Entrepreneur
Akhil Patel, who grew up in London, has a rich academic background. He attended University College School in Hampstead and later earned a BSc in Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His early career included roles as a data analyst, where he honed his skills before embarking on a new venture.
In 2019, Patel founded Amala Chai, inspired by his grandmother’s traditional chai recipes. This shift marked a significant turning point in his professional journey. Today, he operates a popular chai stall outside King’s Cross Station in London, where he begins brewing tea each morning at 08:00. Patel proudly noted in a recent Instagram post, “400,000 cups later, we’ve officially helped Britain swerve the corporate chai latte across the road.”
Amala Chai is committed to sourcing tea and spices directly from small family farms, primarily located in Assam and Kerala. This approach not only supports local farmers but also ensures the authenticity of the flavors offered. The British Museum recently featured Amala Chai in a video, showcasing the sourcing process and the cultural relevance of the ingredients.
Patel’s journey underscores the power of entrepreneurship in bridging cultural divides. His connection with Modi at such a significant event emphasizes the potential for individual stories to resonate on a larger stage, creating a narrative that intertwines personal heritage with global diplomacy.
As the UK and India continue to strengthen their relationship, moments like these serve as reminders of how cultural exchanges can play a pivotal role in fostering understanding and collaboration between nations.
