In a focused operation on the night of July 19, 2023, police officials in Udupi conducted surprise vehicle checks across five locations within the jurisdiction of the Manipal Police Station. The initiative aimed to address traffic violations, particularly targeting instances of drink-driving, and resulted in the seizure of a total of 21 vehicles, which included 18 cars and 3 two-wheelers.

Details of the Operation

Officers from various police units, including the Udupi Town Police, Traffic Police, Malpe Police, and Manipal Police, participated in the checks. The enforcement was led under the directive of the Udupi Superintendent of Police, with the Udupi Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Manipal Police Inspector overseeing the operation. This collaborative effort highlights the commitment of local law enforcement to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations.

During the checks, multiple instances of drink-driving were identified, leading to cases being registered against violators under the Motor Vehicles Act. The law stipulates that each drink-driving offence carries a minimum fine of Rs 10,000. Furthermore, on-the-spot fines totaling Rs 10,000 were imposed on ten vehicles for offences such as rash driving, failure to obey police instructions, and triple riding on two-wheelers.

Future Enforcement Plans

Authorities have announced that such enforcement operations will persist in the coming days, with a continued focus on deterring drink-driving and addressing reckless or speeding motorists. The proactive measures taken by the Udupi police reflect their ongoing commitment to public safety and the enforcement of traffic laws.
