Transgender Community Backs Maratha Morcha’s Reservation Demands
The ongoing Maratha Morcha, advocating for reservation under the Kunbi Maratha category, received significant support from the transgender community on March 12, 2024. Members of this community joined the protest in solidarity with activist Manoj Jarange, marking a pivotal moment in the movement that has resonated with various segments of society.
Dressed in traditional attire, the transgender participants raised slogans, calling on the government to address the long-standing demands of the Maratha community. Their involvement not only highlighted the intersectionality of social justice movements but also underscored a collective call for equality.
Renuka Guru Hasan, a representative of the transgender community, emphasized the importance of their presence, stating, “We know what it means to be denied fundamental rights. We stand together for justice and social equality.” She further expressed the community’s commitment to support not only the Maratha cause but also any group facing injustice, indicating a broader solidarity among marginalized communities.
Echoing Renuka’s sentiments, another member from the Mumbai Kinnar Samaj shared her perspective, saying, “Jarange is not asking for something that the government cannot give. It took decades for us to secure rights. I hope the government acknowledges the Maratha community’s demands and acts swiftly.”
The atmosphere at the protest was charged with emotion. A young girl, visibly moved by the presence of Jarange, broke down in tears as she touched his feet, signifying her admiration and hope. Her father, Bhagirathi Patil, relayed her feelings, stating, “She is happy to have a role model to look up to. She believes her future as a Maratha will be secured once these demands are met.”
Manoj Jarange, who has become the face of the Maratha movement, acknowledged the support from the transgender community and comforted the young girl. He reiterated the commitment to continue the peaceful agitation until justice is achieved.
The solidarity shown by the transgender community serves as a reminder of the interconnected struggles for rights and recognition in society. As the Maratha Morcha continues, the focus remains on fostering inclusivity and addressing the needs of all communities involved.
