Simhachalam Temple Closes for Total Lunar Eclipse Observance

The Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam, located near Visakhapatnam, will close its doors to devotees during the upcoming total lunar eclipse on Sunday, September 7, 2025. This decision follows traditional practices aimed at respecting the significance of this astronomical event. All regular rituals scheduled for that day, including the Suprabhatam, Aradhanas, and Arjitha Sevas, will be cancelled.
A total lunar eclipse will commence at 21:56 and conclude at 01:24 on September 8. During this celestial event, the Earth will position itself directly between the Sun and the Moon, resulting in the Moon appearing a deep red hue—a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “Blood Moon.” In observance of this unique occurrence, the temple’s management has opted to restrict access to devotees.
Prior to the temple’s closure, special prayers and rituals were conducted for the presiding deity. The rituals were led by Sthanacharya T.P. Rajagopal and Chief Priest Srinivasacharya, along with other temple priests and officials. They ensured that all customary rites were diligently performed, reflecting the temple’s commitment to its traditions and the reverence afforded to such significant astronomical events.
Following the completion of the eclipse, purification rituals will take place to sanctify the temple premises. Access for devotees will resume on Monday, September 8, at 08:00, after the necessary rituals have been completed.
This decision to close the temple underscores the importance of maintaining religious customs in the face of cosmic events, emphasizing a deep connection between spirituality and the natural world. As the lunar eclipse approaches, devotees and observers alike will be eager to witness the enchanting transformation of the Moon, while also respecting the time-honored traditions that govern their faith.
