Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Indian citizens to embrace “swadeshi” (locally made) products as the festival season approaches. In his monthly address, “Mann Ki Baat,” he emphasized the significance of the “vocal for local” initiative and the aim of achieving an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Modi’s remarks come during a period of heightened economic challenges, particularly following the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods by the United States under former President Donald Trump.

As various regions in India gear up for celebrations of the Ganesh festival, Durga Puja, and Diwali, Modi urged citizens to prioritize local products when purchasing gifts, clothing, and decorations. “Say with pride this is swadeshi,” he insisted, repeating the phrase to reinforce the message. The Prime Minister believes that adopting this mindset is essential for India’s development.

Embracing Culture and Addressing Natural Disasters

Modi also celebrated the global reach of Indian culture, referencing a recent 51-foot statue of Lord Ram unveiled in Mississauga, Canada. He highlighted a unique exhibition in Vladivostok, Russia, featuring artwork by children inspired by the Ramayana. “It is indeed heartening to see the growing awareness of Indian culture in different parts of the world,” he stated.

In a more somber note, Modi expressed concern over the impact of natural disasters during the monsoon season, which have affected numerous communities across the country. “Natural disasters are testing the country,” he remarked, describing the devastation caused by floods that destroyed homes, submerged fields, and disrupted lives. He praised the efforts of national and state emergency services, which have utilized modern technology, including thermal cameras and drones, to aid in rescue and relief operations.

Achievements in Jammu and Kashmir

In the 125th episode of “Mann Ki Baat,” Modi also highlighted significant achievements in Jammu and Kashmir, including the first day-night cricket match held in Pulwama and the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival at Dal Lake in Srinagar. “Pulwama’s first day-night cricket match was played here. Earlier, this was impossible, but now my country is changing,” he said, celebrating the record turnout for the event.

Additionally, Modi spoke about the potential of local youth, referencing a German football coach, Dietmar Beiersdorfer, who has expressed interest in training players from Shahdol, a town in Madhya Pradesh. Beiersdorfer was inspired by the talent showcased in a podcast and has offered to coach some players in Germany. “This shows that the journey of young football players from Shahdol can attract international attention,” Modi remarked.

In closing, Modi reflected on the upcoming Hyderabad Liberation Day, which commemorates the operation to liberate Hyderabad from Nizam rule. He noted that September will be a time to honor the bravery of those involved in Operation Polo, reinforcing the importance of unity and development within the nation.
