Omar Abdullah Resumes J&K’s Darbar Move, Reviving Tradition
The bi-annual tradition known as the ‘Darbar Move’ has been officially resumed in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, marking a significant return after a four-year hiatus. This move involves the seasonal shift of government offices from the summer capital, Srinagar, to the winter capital, Jammu. The transition aims to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
On November 3, 2025, Abdullah expressed that the discontinuation of the Darbar Move had been a setback for Jammu. He stated, “It was our responsibility, and we had promised the public that we would restore the Darbar Move… This will give a significant boost to the economy of Jammu and Kashmir.” His comments reflect the emotional significance of the tradition, which connects the two major regions of the state.
Understanding the Darbar Move
The ‘Darbar Move’ is a longstanding practice in J&K that dates back nearly 150 years. Traditionally, government offices have shifted with the changing seasons, promoting a sense of unity between Jammu and Srinagar. The practice was suspended in 2021 by the former administration of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, citing the need for cost savings and the transition to an e-office system. The move was projected to save around ₹200 crore annually.
Despite the financial rationale, local traders and residents argued that halting the tradition damaged business and weakened ties between the two regions. The Darbar Move is viewed not only as an administrative necessity but also as a symbol of equality and unity within J&K.
Reactions to the Resumption
With the government offices now operating from Jammu for the winter session, local businesses and residents celebrated the revival of this historic practice. The Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the decision, asserting that it would positively impact the economy. Chamber President Arun Gupta noted that the return of the Darbar Move is expected to invigorate local commerce.
Abdullah reinforced the notion that this step fulfills a political promise, emphasizing the importance of linking Jammu and Srinagar. He articulated hope that the revival would enhance regional unity and strengthen the business climate in Jammu. Farooq Abdullah, a leader of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, echoed these sentiments, stating that efforts to separate the two regions had ultimately failed.
The logistics of the transition involved extensive planning. On October 30 and 31, the offices in Srinagar were closed, and preparations were made for the smooth opening of offices in Jammu. Security measures were heightened, and accommodations for staff were organized to ensure that government functions continued seamlessly.
The restoration of the Darbar Move signifies more than just an administrative shift; it represents a reconnection to tradition and a commitment to regional balance. As offices resume operations in Jammu, the government aims to leverage the symbolic and functional benefits of this practice. The revival stands as a testament to the enduring hope for unity in Jammu and Kashmir, potentially revitalizing both commerce and community relations.
The successful implementation of this transition will be closely watched, as it holds implications for the broader socio-economic landscape of the region. As the winter session begins in Jammu, many look forward to a new chapter that not only honors history but also strives for a harmonious future.
