Omar Abdullah Declares New Struggle for Statehood in Jammu and Kashmir

The hopes for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir have faded, according to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. On March 15, 2024, Abdullah expressed disappointment after the recent Monsoon Session failed to address the issue, stating that the struggle for statehood begins anew from this point.
In remarks made to reporters during the 56th School Raising Day of Sainik School in Nagrota, Abdullah emphasized, “Leave it now, the hope has gone, the water has crossed over. We will start our process from here.” He underscored the need for renewed efforts, saying, “If we need to struggle a bit, have to work hard a bit … that we will do on our part.”
Concerns Over Government Actions
Abdullah criticized the Central Government, alleging that its proposed legislation concerning prime ministers, chief ministers, and ministers is intended to selectively target opposition politicians. He remarked, “In all the cases that have been registered and in which arrests have been made, only opposition members have been targeted.”
He questioned the effectiveness of governmental efforts to combat corruption since 2014, stating, “If this step is truly being taken to end corruption, then what has been the impact of the government’s work since that time?” Abdullah highlighted the importance of the intended use of laws, asserting, “No law is inherently bad — the misuse of a law is what makes it wrong.”
He cautioned members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying, “They will not remain in power forever. The very law they use against others today could tomorrow be used against their own people.” Abdullah warned that manipulating laws could ultimately harm the country.
Responses to Recent Events
Regarding the dismissal of two government employees over alleged connections to terrorism, Abdullah stated that inquiries should be directed to the Raj Bhavan, asserting, “We have no role in it.” He also addressed questions on cabinet discussions and relief measures following the recent cloudburst, assuring that the government is providing as much assistance as possible. “If, after assessment, more relief is required, we will provide that as well,” he confirmed.
Abdullah’s comments reflect ongoing tensions in Jammu and Kashmir as the region continues to navigate its political landscape. His call for renewed efforts towards statehood indicates a determination to advocate for the rights and needs of the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir amidst a challenging political backdrop.
