Modi and Putin Reaffirm India-Russia Partnership Amid US Tariffs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. This dialogue comes in the context of rising tensions due to tariffs imposed by the United States.

In a post on X, Modi remarked, “Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine.” The discussion included a review of ongoing bilateral initiatives, with Modi expressing anticipation for hosting Putin in India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.

During their exchange, Putin provided an update on Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance advocating for a peaceful resolution to the situation. This dialogue takes place amid increasing pressure from US President Donald Trump, who recently signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duty to 50 percent. This is among the highest tariffs the US has levied against any nation.

Broader Implications of US Tariffs

The newly implemented tariffs will come into effect on August 27, 2023, complicating India’s energy procurement strategy. On Thursday, Modi also spoke with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose country has faced similar trade challenges. The leaders discussed enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including trade, technology, energy, and agriculture.

Earlier, on the same day, Ajit Kumar Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, met with Putin at the Kremlin, further emphasizing the strategic ties between India and Russia. In the backdrop of the tariff disputes, China has invited Modi to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin at the end of the month. Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, expressed optimism that the summit would enhance regional cooperation, stating, “We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship, and fruitful results.”
