Kashmiri activist Javed Beigh addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, bringing attention to Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism during his speech. Beigh specifically referenced the devastating attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 26 Hindu tourists. He highlighted that the assailants, including a young man named Tahir from Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir, were radicalized by the militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

Call for Accountability

During his address, Beigh asserted that LeT operates with relative impunity in Pakistan, shielded by state protection. He condemned the Pahalgam attack as a crime against humanity and urged the Council to hold both the attackers and their sponsors accountable for their actions. “The international community must take a stand against terrorism,” Beigh stated, emphasizing the urgency of addressing such threats.

Beigh further called on Pakistan to grant access to international non-governmental organizations and fact-finding teams to investigate terror training sites. He underscored the necessity of transparency in addressing the root causes of terrorism, which he believes are exacerbated by state-sponsored activities.

UN Security Council’s Recognition

The UN Security Council has already acknowledged the involvement of Lashkar-e-Toiba in the Pahalgam attack, listing its alias, The Resistance Force, in a sanctions report. This recognition underscores the Council’s commitment to addressing terrorism and its implications for global security.

Beigh’s address at the UNHRC marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle against terrorism in the region. His call to action serves as a reminder of the need for international cooperation in combating the threats posed by extremist groups.

As the dialogue continues, the international community faces pressing questions regarding the accountability of states that harbor terrorist organizations. Beigh’s efforts aim to ensure that such critical issues remain at the forefront of global discussions.
