James Anderson, the most prolific wicket-taker in Test cricket history for England, has been awarded a knighthood in recognition of his illustrious career. The honor was conferred by the Princess Royal during a ceremony held at Windsor Castle. Earlier this year, Anderson was also included in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honors list, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sport of cricket.

Joining the Ranks of Cricket Legends

With this knighthood, Anderson joins a distinguished group of English cricket icons, including Sir Ian Botham, Sir Geoffrey Boycott, Sir Alastair Cook, and Sir Andrew Strauss. His First-Class debut came in 2002 for Lancashire, and since then, he has made an indelible mark in the game, playing in 188 Tests and capturing an astounding 1,143 wickets in red-ball cricket.

Anderson concluded his international career as the most successful fast bowler in Test history, with 704 wickets. He ranks third overall in the all-time list, trailing only behind Muthiah Muralidaran of Sri Lanka, who took 800 wickets, and Shane Warne of Australia, who claimed 708 wickets.

Continued Presence in Cricket

Despite retiring from international cricket, Anderson remains engaged with the sport and is reportedly in discussions regarding a one-year contract extension with Lancashire, potentially covering the 2026 season. During the 2025 domestic season, he participated in six County Championship matches before a side injury curtailed his playing time. Notably, he returned to T20 cricket for the first time in over a decade, featuring in both the Vitality Blast and Men’s Hundred.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Anderson became the second-oldest player to compete in the Men’s Hundred, following South African legend Imran Tahir, who played for Birmingham Phoenix at the age of 43 years and 149 days.

James Anderson’s knighthood not only celebrates his personal achievements but also serves as a testament to his enduring influence on cricket, inspiring future generations of players.
