Heavy rains battered Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on September 1, 2023, causing waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that temperatures were significantly lower than usual, providing some relief from the region’s typical heat and humidity. Areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and various parts of Delhi experienced intense downpours by the afternoon.

The IMD had issued a yellow alert for September 1, warning residents of potential rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds during the afternoon and evening. Many locals noted a surprising chill in the air, as cooler winds swept across the region.

Impact of Rainfall on Commuters

The rainfall led to substantial waterlogging in several areas, particularly in Noida and Ghaziabad, resulting in significant traffic congestion. Major arterial roads experienced slow-moving traffic, forcing commuters to navigate flooded streets. Reports indicated that the situation was particularly dire in parts of Gurugram and Delhi, where water accumulation obstructed normal vehicle movement.

Flood Concerns Along the Yamuna River

Concerns about flooding have emerged as the water level of the Yamuna River at Kalindi Kunj near the Okhla Barrage approached the critical 200-meter mark. This alarming rise in water levels has raised fears among residents living along the riverbanks.

Neeraj Semwal, Divisional Commissioner, addressed these concerns, stating, “Water is being released from the Yamuna as planned at Hathni Kund. All arrangements are in place. If the water level continues to rise, we have separate arrangements, including tents, ready for those affected.”

The Hathini Kund Barrage is currently discharging 329,751 cusec of water, with all gates fully opened. Advisory notices have been distributed to villages along the river to ensure that residents remain safe and prepared for any potential flooding.

As the weather continues to evolve, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the situation closely. With the combination of heavy rainfall and rising water levels, the safety of residents in the affected areas remains a top priority.
