Google’s Gemini App Surges to 450 Million Active Users

Google’s Gemini app has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing **450 million** monthly active users. This impressive figure was confirmed by **Shekar Khosla**, Vice President of Marketing and Site Lead at Google India. The increase represents a remarkable jump from the previous quarter, with daily usage seeing a rise of over **50%**.
The surge in user engagement can be attributed to Google’s initiative to provide free access to its premium Google AI Pro plan for Indian college students aged **18 years and above**. This offer, which is valued at **₹19,500** per year, is available until **September 15, 2025**. Since its launch in India in **June**, the Gemini app has expanded its reach by offering support in **nine Indian languages**, including Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil.
Users can access the app on Android devices, either through direct download or via **Google Assistant**. Once the app is activated, features can be accessed easily by swiping from the corners of the screen or using the voice command “Hey Google.”
Google’s AI Initiatives in India
During the **Google I/O Connect India 2025** event, the company announced several initiatives aimed at enhancing India’s AI capabilities and empowering local developers. A key development was the localization of onshore processing for **Gemini 2.5 Flash**, designed to improve the speed and reduce latency for AI applications in regulated sectors such as healthcare, finance, and governance.
Google is also collaborating with three Indian AI start-ups—**Sarvam**, **Soket AI**, and **Gnani**—to develop Make-in-India AI models based on the Gemini platform. Additionally, the partnership with **IIT Bombay’s BharatGen** aims to enhance automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) models specifically for Indic languages.
These strategic collaborations reflect Google’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the Indian market and fostering technological advancement within the country. By focusing on local needs and capabilities, Google is positioning itself as a key player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape of India.
Through these initiatives, Google not only seeks to enhance user experience within its applications but also aims to contribute significantly to the technological growth of India, paving the way for innovative solutions in various sectors.
