ED Launches Raids in 10 States Over Medical Colleges Bribery Scheme

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive raids on November 27, 2023, across ten states in India as part of a money laundering investigation linked to alleged bribery in the approval of medical colleges. These coordinated searches targeted at least 15 locations, including seven medical college premises and properties associated with various private individuals.

The states involved in the operation include Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. This sweeping action is part of an ongoing investigation initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), focusing on significant allegations of corruption within the medical education sector.

The case stems from a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in June 2023. It alleges that several government officials, including those from the National Medical Commission (NMC), were involved in accepting bribes to disclose confidential information regarding inspections of medical colleges. Authorities believe this illicit exchange enabled middlemen and management of these institutions to manipulate inspection parameters, leading to the unauthorized approval of various courses.
