A 26-year-old delivery executive was critically injured in a brutal attack by a group of approximately twelve armed men in Gurugram on Saturday, March 15, 2024. The victim, identified as Abhishek, suffered severe injuries, including at least 15 deep cuts, after the assailants used axes and other weapons in broad daylight. He was subsequently placed on ventilator support due to the severity of his wounds.

The incident occurred around 13:30 hours in Sector 10 when Abhishek was preparing to make deliveries after leaving a warehouse. According to police reports, the attackers arrived in a car and on five motorcycles, their faces covered. They first rammed Abhishek’s motorcycle with their vehicle before launching their assault. Investigators noted that one of the most grievous injuries involved Abhishek’s left leg, which was “virtually severed” due to repeated blows with an axe.

Authorities have indicated that the attack was motivated by a personal vendetta against Abhishek’s younger brother, Ritesh, aged 22. Ritesh had previously intervened to rescue a neighbor, Vinit, from an assault in Shakti Park colony a week prior, leading to a grudge held by the attackers. Vinit himself was critically injured during that incident, sustaining multiple head injuries.

Ritesh reported to local media that he provided CCTV footage of the assault to the police. The video reportedly shows the attackers striking Abhishek’s leg repeatedly even after he had lost consciousness. “The intent was clear,” Ritesh stated. “They aimed to chop off his leg.” He described the extensive injuries, noting that Abhishek sustained deep cuts to his shoulder, back, and left leg, with doctors estimating there to be between 15 and 20 wounds.

Following the attack, Ritesh’s family was alerted by warehouse staff. His mother and aunt rushed to the scene, managing to arrange transport for Abhishek to the Sector 10A civil hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to a private hospital in Manesar, where he remains in critical condition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Karan Goel stated that the attack stemmed from a longstanding dispute between the two families. He confirmed that the identities of all assailants have been established and that police raids are currently underway to apprehend them. “There was clear intent to murder the victim,” Goel noted, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

An official First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the suspects under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to culpable homicide and armed rioting, based on statements provided by Abhishek’s uncle, as the victim was unable to give a statement himself.

This incident highlights growing concerns about violence in public spaces and the dire consequences of personal vendettas spilling into the community. As police continue their investigation, the family of the victim remains hopeful for his recovery amidst a challenging ordeal.
