Delhi’s Transit-Oriented Development Policy to Launch Soon
The anticipated Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policy for Delhi is set to be unveiled within the next month, as announced by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar. During the inauguration of the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) conference in Gurugram, Khattar outlined key features of the proposed policy, which aims to facilitate urban growth around metro corridors.
Under the new TOD policy, high-rise buildings will be permitted within a radius of 500 metres to 800 metres from metro stations. The initiative is designed to enhance urban corridors along the metro routes and promote accessible living spaces. Khattar emphasized that the policy will also encompass 18 metre roads, allowing commercial and residential properties within the designated area to provide direct access to metro stations via structures such as skywalks and tunnels.
In a bid to improve last-mile connectivity in the capital, the government is exploring the introduction of a Pod Taxi system in congested areas. These innovative taxis, capable of carrying between six and ten passengers, will operate on elevated tracks or rope ways, providing efficient transport solutions for residents.
Khattar further announced plans to introduce premium seating options in metro bogies, offering luxury travel experiences at an additional fare. He stated, “If the passengers are ready to spend on luxury travel then we can create and provide the necessary service.”
Additionally, the establishment of Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL) was revealed, with the objective of expanding the metro network beyond India. A new entity, the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), will be developed in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to enhance interconnectivity and ensure safe, reliable transportation options.
To support these ambitious initiatives, Khattar also announced the creation of the Delhi Metro Rail Academy, which will focus on training and capacity building for personnel involved in metro operations.
This comprehensive approach to urban planning and transportation aims to transform Delhi’s infrastructure, making it more efficient and responsive to the needs of its citizens. The TOD policy and associated improvements are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of urban mobility in the national capital.
