Bengaluru Airport Achieves Historic Level 3 Accessibility Accreditation
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has made history by becoming the first airport in India to attain Level 3 accreditation under the Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation (AEA) programme established by the Airports Council International (ACI). This significant achievement follows the airport’s prior upgrade from Level 1 in December 2024, marking a rapid advancement in its commitment to accessibility.
The upgrade to Level 3 was made possible through a series of strategic initiatives focused on enhancing digital accessibility. According to a press release from the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), these efforts included strengthened partnerships, expanded training and awareness programmes, and the integration of universal design principles.
Innovative Initiatives for Inclusivity
KIA has introduced several inclusive initiatives aimed at improving the travel experience for all passengers, particularly those with disabilities. Recent activities include joint autism awareness programmes in collaboration with airlines, as well as passenger co-creation sessions that involve Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRMs), caregivers, and accessibility experts.
Additionally, specialized training modules have been developed for airport staff and concessionaires. These training efforts aim to enhance empathy and service standards for travellers with diverse needs, ensuring that staff members are well-equipped to assist passengers effectively.
Another critical aspect of KIA’s approach has been the rollout of a comprehensive accessibility policy. This policy outlines the airport’s commitment to creating an environment that is not only compliant with regulations but also supportive of all passengers, regardless of mobility challenges.
A Vision for the Future
The successful transition to Level 3 accreditation reflects KIA’s dedication to fostering an inclusive airport environment. The recognition from ACI underscores the airport’s efforts to set a benchmark for accessibility in India and beyond.
As KIA continues to innovate and enhance its services, the focus remains on creating a seamless travel experience for everyone. The airport aims to maintain its momentum by exploring further advancements and collaborations that prioritize accessibility.
The achievements at Kempegowda International Airport serve as a model for other airports in the region, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in air travel. With growing awareness and commitment to accessibility, KIA is paving the way for a more inclusive aviation industry, ultimately benefiting millions of passengers.
