Wayne Rooney Defends Cristiano Ronaldo Amid Rivalry Rumors
Speculation surrounding the relationship between former Manchester United teammates Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo has intensified over the years, particularly following a series of comments made by Ronaldo in 2022. In a recent podcast appearance, Rooney sought to clarify the situation, insisting that any perceived animosity is unfounded.
In an explosive interview with journalist Piers Morgan, Ronaldo labeled Rooney a “rat,” a remark that fueled rumors of a rift between the two football legends. The comment came during a discussion about wealth versus social media influence, wherein Ronaldo seemed to dismiss Rooney’s opinions. Nearly three years later, Rooney appeared on Rio Ferdinand‘s podcast, addressing these allegations directly.
“People think I hate him (Ronaldo), I love him,” Rooney stated emphatically. He expressed admiration for Ronaldo, referring to him as an “absolute genius” and praising his contributions to the sport. Rooney emphasized that their relationship was closer than many realize, despite public perceptions.
Rooney speculated that his previous statements asserting Lionel Messi as the superior player may have contributed to misunderstandings between him and Ronaldo. “I think in his last three seasons he’s been top goalscorer in Saudi,” he noted, acknowledging Ronaldo’s remarkable performance. Rooney added, “I absolutely love Messi, love watching him play… because I think Messi has a little bit more in terms of how he played and taking players on.”
Despite this comparison, Rooney was quick to clarify his respect for Ronaldo’s abilities. “Cristiano is an absolute genius and what he’s doing is incredible,” he remarked, indicating that his admiration for both players does not diminish his appreciation for Ronaldo’s talent.
As Ronaldo continues to perform at a high level, even at the age of 40, he remains a formidable presence in the sport. Currently playing for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, Ronaldo has made a strong start to the 2025-26 season, netting four goals and providing one assist in just five matches across competitions.
Rooney’s comments reflect a broader conversation about rivalry and respect in sports, particularly among players who have shared significant moments on and off the pitch. With both Rooney and Ronaldo having left an indelible mark on football history, their relationship, marked by mutual respect, continues to intrigue fans and commentators alike.
