Trevor Immelman Honors Fuzzy Zoeller as His Favorite Masters Champion
Trevor Immelman, a former professional golfer and current head of the world golf rankings, recently paid tribute to the late Fuzzy Zoeller, referring to him as his favorite Masters Champion. Zoeller, who passed away at the age of 74, is remembered for his remarkable achievements in golf, notably winning the Masters and the US Open.
Immelman shared his admiration for Zoeller on his X handle, expressing how the golfer’s success coincided with his own birth year. He stated, “Fuzzy Zoeller is my favorite golfer,” highlighting the significance of Zoeller’s victories in shaping his appreciation for the sport. In total, Zoeller secured two major championships: the 1979 Masters Tournament and the 1984 US Open.
At the Augusta National Golf Club, Zoeller captured the Masters title by finishing at eight under par, triumphing in a playoff against Ed Sneed and Tom Watson. His victory in the US Open came through a similar playoff against Greg Norman, where he finished four under par.
Zoeller’s contributions to golf extend beyond these major wins. He also claimed several PGA Tour victories, including the 1979 Andy Williams-San Diego Open Invitational, the 1981 Colonial National Invitation, the 1983 Panasonic Las Vegas Pro Celebrity Classic, and the 1986 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, with scores of six under, six under, eighteen under, and eleven under, respectively.
In the wake of Zoeller’s passing, Fred Ridley, chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, expressed condolences and admiration for the golfer’s legacy. According to the Augusta National website, Ridley emphasized Zoeller’s impact on the sport and the joy he brought to fans and players alike.
Additionally, Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA Tour, shared his thoughts on Zoeller’s legacy through the Tour’s X page. Monahan remarked on the significance of Zoeller’s achievements and how they enriched the history of golf.
Fuzzy Zoeller’s passing marks a poignant moment in the golfing world, as many reflect on his contributions to the sport and the memories he created. His legacy will undoubtedly endure, inspiring future generations of golfers to strive for excellence.
