Sheetal Devi Claims World Championship, Redefines Archery Limits

In a historic moment for archery, Sheetal Devi has become the world champion at just 18 years of age. Competing at the 2023 World Championships, she delivered an extraordinary performance, defeating Turkey’s Oznur Cure Girdi with a score of 146-143 in the final match. This victory marks a significant milestone, as Sheetal is not only the first armless woman to win a world championship but also India’s first-ever para-world champion archer.
Breaking Barriers in Archery
Sheetal’s triumph is particularly remarkable given her unique challenges. Born with phocomelia, a condition affecting limb development, she has defied conventional expectations to excel in a sport that typically requires the use of arms. Utilizing her legs to hold the bow and her mouth to notch arrows, she has mastered techniques that allow her to compete at the highest level. Her journey exemplifies resilience and determination, characteristics she has cultivated throughout her life.
Before achieving this championship title, Sheetal made headlines by winning a bronze medal in the mixed team event at the 2024 Paralympics and a silver medal at the Asian Games. Her track record reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence. “Whenever I see the medals I’ve won, I feel inspired to win more,” she stated in an interview with the BBC last year. “I have only just started.” This hunger for achievement has driven her to surpass her own limits.
A Journey to Glory
Sheetal entered the finals with a strong performance in the earlier rounds, displaying an impressive ability to control her nerves under pressure. In the quarter-finals, she took a lead, needing a perfect final score to secure her place in the next round. She delivered with a combination of 10, X, X, showcasing her precision and focus. In the semi-finals, she initially trailed world number two Jodie Grinham before recovering to win decisively.
In the final match against Oznur, Sheetal capitalized on a rare slip from her opponent, establishing an early lead. With scores of 30 in the second end, she maintained her advantage, finishing with a perfect last end that sealed her victory. “The pressure wasn’t great,” she reflected after her match. “I controlled myself and shot very calmly. It felt amazing just to be in the finals again.”
Sheetal’s performance not only highlights her individual talent but also serves as a source of inspiration for many, particularly within the para-athlete community. As the youngest world champion in her category, she has opened doors for others who face similar challenges. This victory is not merely an endpoint for her but a promising beginning.
With her eyes set on future achievements, Sheetal Devi stands as a testament to what can be accomplished through determination and innovation. As she embarks on the next chapter of her career, the sports world eagerly anticipates her future exploits. For Sheetal, the dream of becoming a world champion has now become a reality, but her aspirations continue to rise higher.
