Rishabh Pant Confirms Foot Fracture, Out of Fourth Test Against England

Rishabh Pant, the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, is set to miss the remainder of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford due to a confirmed foot fracture. The injury occurred during the opening day of play on March 15, 2024, when Pant sustained damage to his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep against England’s fast bowler, Chris Woakes.
During the second session, Pant edged the ball onto his foot, resulting in immediate pain and visible swelling. He was batting at 37 runs at the time and had to retire hurt, leaving the field on a golf buggy. Following the incident, Pant underwent scans that confirmed the fracture.
The Indian team management is currently deliberating on Pant’s ability to bat in the ongoing Test. While he has been ruled out of keeping wicket, a final decision on his batting status will be made in consultation with the BCCI medical staff.
This injury poses a significant setback for India as they compete against England in this crucial match. Pant has been an integral part of the team, contributing not only with his wicketkeeping but also as a dynamic batsman. His absence will be felt as India strives to secure a win in the Test series.
As the situation develops, further updates are expected from the team management regarding Pant’s recovery and potential return to play.

Arsenal Set to Sign Viktor Gyokeres for £63.8 Million

Arsenal is finalizing the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres for a fee of £63.8 million. The 27-year-old forward is currently traveling to London with his agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, to undergo a medical examination. This step is crucial for completing the transfer before Gyokeres joins the squad for their upcoming pre-season tour in Asia.
The Gunners have agreed to pay a guaranteed fee of £55.1 million, with potential add-ons that could reach up to £8.7 million. Negotiations have been ongoing for over a week, and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, both Gyokeres and Cetinkaya are committed to finalizing the deal. Cetinkaya notably waived his commission, which is estimated at around £5.6 million, to facilitate his client’s move to Arsenal.
Arsenal’s agreement with Sporting Lisbon stipulates that the Portuguese club will receive £1.09 million for every 20 matches Gyokeres plays for Arsenal, with a maximum payout of £4.36 million. Additionally, Sporting will earn £430,000 for every 20 goals or assists he provides, capped at £873,000. Each time Arsenal qualifies for the Champions League, Sporting Lisbon is set to receive another payment of £873,000, potentially totaling £3.5 million.
Gyokeres’s agent played a pivotal role in expediting the negotiations, as the breakthrough in talks occurred earlier this week after Sporting Lisbon thoroughly reviewed the contracts. The club is optimistic about receiving the full amount, given that the add-ons are considered easily achievable.
Having joined Sporting Lisbon from Coventry City for approximately £20 million in 2023, Gyokeres has demonstrated exceptional scoring ability. In just two seasons in Portugal, he netted an impressive 97 goals in 102 matches. Last season alone, he scored 54 goals across all competitions, including a standout hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.
This transfer represents Gyokeres’s return to English football, where he previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Coventry City. According to The Athletic, he is expected to wear the iconic number 14 shirt at Arsenal, a number famously associated with the club’s all-time top scorer, Thierry Henry.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Gyokeres is part of a busy summer transfer window for the club. They have already secured midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £51 million, and central midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford for £15 million. The Gunners also added Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for £5 million, as well as winger Noni Madueke in a deal worth up to £52 million. Most recently, they confirmed the signing of defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia for an initial fee of approximately £13 million.
With these strategic signings, Arsenal aims to strengthen their squad as they prepare for the upcoming season. The addition of Gyokeres is anticipated to enhance their attacking options significantly, making the club a formidable contender in both the Premier League and European competitions.

Geoffrey Boycott Criticizes Rishabh Pant’s Injury After Unorthodox Shot

Former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has publicly criticized Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant following his recent foot fracture, attributing the injury to an ill-advised shot during a Test match. The incident occurred during the 68th over of India’s first innings when Pant attempted a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes. The ball struck him on the foot, leading to an immediate swelling and subsequent medical evaluation that confirmed a fracture.
Boycott expressed his disappointment, stating that Pant has “only himself to blame” for the injury. Speaking to the Telegraph, Boycott emphasized that there was “no need” for such a high-risk shot given India’s comfortable position in the match. “They were nicely in control, batting orthodox. Rishabh tries amazing strokes… but occasionally, when it does not, it can look silly,” he noted.
Despite the injury, Pant showed determination by returning to bat, adding 16 runs to his overnight score of 38, which included a notable six off Jofra Archer. Nevertheless, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that he would not resume wicketkeeping duties, with Dhruv Jurel stepping in for the duration of the Test match.
As the match progresses, it remains uncertain whether Pant will be allowed to bat in the final innings. His absence could significantly impact India’s chances, as Boycott pointed out. “Him not batting in both innings might cost India the match. It will affect the runs they could add to that innings,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of Pant’s contributions to the team.
The injury serves as a reminder of the risks players face on the field, especially when attempting unconventional shots. Pant’s aggressive style has often earned him praise, but as Boycott highlighted, it can also lead to detrimental consequences when it does not pay off.

Ishan Kishan Ruled Out as Rishabh Pant’s Replacement for England Tour

The Indian cricket team faces a significant setback as wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the ongoing Test series against England due to an ankle injury. During the fourth Test match, Pant sustained the injury after being struck on his ankle by a delivery from Chris Woakes. He was immediately taken off the field, though he later returned to bat in the second innings. Despite this effort, medical assessments have confirmed he will be unable to continue in the series.
With Pant’s absence confirmed, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar initially planned to call up Ishan Kishan as his replacement. Unfortunately, Kishan is also sidelined due to an ankle injury he sustained recently. According to a report from The Times of India, Kishan has ten stitches on his left foot following an accident on a scooter. Although the selectors reached out to him, they did so only shortly before the announcement on Thursday. As a result, Kishan is unable to travel to England.
In light of Kishan’s situation, Narayan Jagadeesan has been named as Pant’s replacement and will join the Indian team prior to the fifth Test match. Jagadeesan has yet to make his international debut but brings substantial experience, having scored 3,373 runs in 52 first-class matches at an impressive average of 47.50. He has previously been associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
England Dominates Fourth Test
As the match progresses, England has taken a strong position in the fourth Test, finishing Day 2 with a score of 225 for 2 in just 46 overs. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett have been instrumental in this performance, scoring 84 and 94 runs respectively. With England trailing by only 133 runs from India’s total of 358, they look poised to take control of the match.
Currently, England leads the five-match Test series 2-1 under the captaincy of Ben Stokes. The ongoing competitiveness highlights the challenges both teams face as they vie for supremacy in this highly anticipated series. As the situation develops, the absence of key players like Pant and Kishan adds another layer of complexity to India’s campaign.
