Prithvi Shaw Achieves 2nd Fastest Double Century in Ranji Trophy
Former India U-19 captain Prithvi Shaw made headlines by scoring the second-fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history during an Elite Group B match against Chandigarh on October 27, 2025. Playing for Maharashtra in the 2025-26 season, Shaw reached the 200-run mark in just 141 balls, highlighting his explosive batting skills in only his second match for the team.
The match took place at Sector 16 Stadium in Chandigarh, where Shaw’s impressive innings featured 28 fours and 3 sixes. His remarkable performance not only secured him a place in the record books but also showcased his ability to dominate the opposition with a blend of aggression and precision.
Shaw’s achievement places him just behind former India and Mumbai batter Ravi Shastri, who holds the record for the fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history. Shastri achieved this feat in 1985, needing only 123 balls to reach 200 runs against Baroda at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He batted at No. 6 for the Sunil Gavaskar-led side, scoring 13 fours and 13 sixes during that match.
Another notable name in this elite group is Rahul Singh from Hyderabad, who scored a double century in 143 balls against Nagaland in 2024. These performances underscore the remarkable talent emerging in Indian domestic cricket.
Looking beyond the Ranji Trophy, the overall record for the fastest double century in first-class cricket belongs to Shafiqullah from Afghanistan, who reached the milestone in just 103 balls during a domestic match in the 2017-18 season.
Shaw’s achievement not only reflects his individual prowess but also adds to the rich legacy of the Ranji Trophy, a tournament that has seen numerous legendary performances over the years. As the competition unfolds, cricket enthusiasts will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Shaw and his quest to further cement his status as one of the premier batsmen in Indian cricket.
