Owaisi Criticizes India’s Cricket Match Against Pakistan Amid Tensions

The India-Pakistan cricket match scheduled for the Asia Cup has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, particularly from Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the AIMIM party. Owaisi has raised concerns regarding the significance of sporting events in light of recent violence in India, specifically referencing the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 people on April 22, 2023. His remarks target the central government, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), questioning the prioritization of financial gain over human lives.
During a public gathering in Hyderabad, Owaisi demanded clarity from the BJP on whether the revenue generated from the match—estimated to be between 2000 crores and 3000 crores Indian Rupees—was more valuable than the lives lost in the Pahalgam attack. He referenced a statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who emphasized that “water and blood cannot flow together,” suggesting that dialogues with Pakistan should not occur alongside acts of terror.
Owaisi expressed disbelief that a cricket match could proceed under such circumstances, highlighting the contrast between the BJP’s rhetoric about patriotism and their actions concerning matches against Pakistan. He stated, “Our BJP needs to tell us, spare the match against Pakistan, which of the two is more valuable – lives of our 26 citizens or money?” This comment underscores the tension between national sentiment and commercial interests in the context of sports.
The AIMIM leader also criticized the BJP’s inconsistent stance on cricket matches with Pakistan, accusing them of prioritizing financial benefits over the welfare of victims’ families. He asserted that his party would continue to advocate for those affected by the Pahalgam attack. “How does this match get to happen? It should not be played at all,” Owaisi declared.
As the match approaches, scheduled to take place in Dubai, the backdrop of heightened tensions following the terrorist attack adds a layer of complexity to the sporting event. This will be the first encounter between India and Pakistan since the violence escalated earlier in the year, particularly following India’s military response to the Pahalgam attack.
In summary, Owaisi’s remarks bring attention to the broader implications of cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan, challenging the narrative of sport as a unifying force. As the match unfolds, it remains to be seen how these sentiments will resonate with fans and political leaders alike.
