Norway Secures 2026 FIFA World Cup Spot with Haaland’s Heroics
Norway clinched their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a decisive 4-1 victory over Italy on March 25, 2024. The match, held as part of the qualifying rounds, featured a remarkable performance from Erling Haaland, who scored two goals to lead his team to triumph. This achievement marks Norway’s return to the World Cup stage, having last participated in 1998.
Haaland’s contributions were vital throughout the qualifying campaign, where he netted an impressive total of 16 goals in just eight matches. His consistent scoring has not only made him the top scorer in the current qualifying round but has also established him as a key figure in Norway’s football aspirations.
After the match, Haaland expressed his feelings to Norwegian broadcaster TV2, stating, “I’m happy, but more relieved. There’s a lot of pressure and stuff, and I feel it. But it’s fun.” His performance has drawn praise from multiple corners, including world-renowned chess champion Magnus Carlsen, who shared his excitement on social media regarding Norway’s World Cup qualification.
The match began with Italy’s Francesco Pio Esposito scoring early, giving the home team a 1-0 lead within the first ten minutes. However, Norway responded strongly in the second half. Ahmed Nusa equalized in the 63rd minute with a well-placed left-foot shot from inside the box, igniting the comeback.
Haaland then took center stage, scoring his first goal in the 78th minute when he volleyed home a cross while unmarked in the box. Just a minute later, he struck again, extending his tally for the campaign to 16 goals and putting Norway ahead 3-1. The match concluded with Jorgen Strand Larsen adding a fourth goal in stoppage time, sealing Italy’s fate.
Norway’s qualification for the World Cup is a significant milestone, representing their fourth appearance in the tournament’s history, following previous participations in 1938, 1994, and 1998. Interestingly, Haaland’s father, Alf Inge Haaland, was also part of the squad that competed in the 1994 World Cup.
In related news, Portugal also secured their place in the upcoming World Cup with a staggering 9-1 win over Armenia in Porto. The match showcased a brilliant performance from Bruno Fernandes and Joao Neves, both of whom scored hat-tricks.
As Norway prepares for the World Cup in North America, all eyes will be on Haaland and the national team to see how they will fare on the world stage.
