Kohli and Rohit’s Performances Key to 2027 World Cup Aspirations

In a recent discussion about the future of Indian cricket, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting emphasized the importance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the ongoing ODI series in Australia. He believes their performances will significantly impact their ability to compete in the 2027 World Cup. The Indian duo faced a challenging return to international cricket in Perth, where they struggled against a formidable Australian pace attack, leading to a seven-wicket defeat.
Assessing the ODI Series Impact
Both Kohli and Rohit, now primarily focused on white-ball formats, participated in their first match for India since March. The difficult conditions in Perth, characterized by extra bounce and a fast-paced bowling lineup, contributed to India’s collective batting failure. The focus now shifts to the second ODI of the three-match series, scheduled to take place in Adelaide on Thursday, where the conditions are expected to be more favorable for the Indian batsmen.
Ponting, speaking on the ICC Review alongside former India head coach Ravi Shastri, highlighted that setting short-term goals is essential for Kohli and Rohit. He expressed concern about players who claim to have achieved everything, emphasizing the need for ongoing motivation. “Virat’s always been a highly motivated person,” Ponting noted, suggesting that both players should focus on immediate achievements rather than solely on the World Cup.
Managing Expectations and Performance
Shastri shared his perspective on the performance of the two seasoned players, advocating for patience as they adjust back to competitive cricket following their absence after the IPL. “When you come back from a long layoff, you are obviously going to be rusty,” he stated. Shastri acknowledged the challenges faced by any overseas team arriving in Australia just days before a match, particularly against skilled fast bowlers.
He reinforced the idea that enjoyment and passion for the game are critical factors in assessing their future performances. “If you tick the boxes on enjoyment and hunger, then you can give them both time, as they have the class and experience,” he remarked. Shastri prefers to wait for further performances before making any judgments about their capabilities moving forward.
As the series progresses, all eyes will remain on Kohli and Rohit, who are tasked with proving their worth not only in the current series but also in the quest for the 2027 World Cup. The upcoming ODI in Adelaide may serve as a pivotal moment for the duo as they seek to regain their form and solidify their positions in India’s cricketing landscape.
