Italy’s New Attack Thrives, But Defense Raises Concerns

Italy’s national football team has displayed a remarkable attacking prowess under new head coach Gennaro Gattuso, scoring a total of ten goals in their opening two matches of the UEFA World Cup qualifiers. However, this offensive success has been overshadowed by alarming defensive lapses, leading to a critical reevaluation of the team’s defensive capabilities.
In their first match against Estonia on October 13, 2023, Italy secured a convincing 5-0 victory. The team recorded an impressive expected goals (xG) of 4.74 and launched a staggering 40 shots on goal. While this performance highlighted Italy’s attacking potential, it starkly contrasted with the defensive frailties exhibited in their subsequent match against Israel on October 16, 2023. In that encounter, Italy conceded twice in the final three minutes, ultimately winning 5-4 after a dramatic late goal. The match marked the first time Italy conceded four goals during a men’s World Cup qualifying match, and the first occurrence of two own goals in over fifty years.
Gattuso’s candid assessment post-match reflected the gravity of the situation: “We’re a bunch of crazies; we concede absurd goals!” His frustration was evident, especially after a match that saw Italy fortunate to escape with a victory despite their defensive blunders.
In both matches, Italy exhibited an attacking flair that has been absent in recent years. Gattuso’s bold tactical approach, including the deployment of two strikers, Moise Kean and Mateo Retegui, has reinvigorated the team’s offensive dynamics. Wide players were encouraged to take on defenders, and midfielders were tasked with supporting the attack. This strategy yielded positive results, yet it left the backline vulnerable.
The defensive issues were glaring against Israel. Early in the match, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma narrowly avoided conceding an own goal from a corner kick after a VAR review disallowed it due to a foul. However, Italy’s luck ran out when midfielder Manuel Locatelli inadvertently scored an own goal, followed by another defensive error leading to an easy goal for Israel. The match culminated in a chaotic finish, with Italy conceding twice in the dying minutes, showcasing a lack of concentration that is uncharacteristic of a team with Italy’s storied defensive pedigree.
Historically, Italy has built its reputation on defensive strength and tactical discipline, exemplified by legends such as Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci. The current team’s struggles raise questions about whether Gattuso’s attacking philosophy has diminished the renowned defensive solidity that the Azzurri have long prided themselves on.
Despite the defensive inconsistencies, Gattuso’s tenure has injected enthusiasm into the team. His willingness to adopt a more aggressive style of play marks a departure from the conservative strategies employed by previous coaches Roberto Mancini and Luciano Spalletti. While he may not possess the tactical sophistication of his predecessors, Gattuso’s blue-collar approach resonates with the players and fans alike.
Looking ahead, Italy’s challenge will be to strike a balance between their newfound attacking flair and the defensive discipline that has historically defined their play. Gattuso acknowledged the need for greater focus, stating, “We have to stay concentrated until the end — the game isn’t over until the whistle blows.”
As the team prepares for upcoming matches, supporters remain hopeful that Italy can resolve its defensive issues while maintaining the attacking vigor they have demonstrated so far. The journey under Gattuso promises to be intriguing, and fans will be watching closely to see if this new era brings both goals and greater defensive stability.
