Hussain Calls for Bethell’s County Championship Inclusion Before Ashes

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has urged young all-rounder Jacob Bethell to participate in the County Championship ahead of the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. Hussain expressed concern that Bethell has lost his batting rhythm and emphasized the importance of regaining form during this critical period.
Hussain specifically pointed to the challenges Bethell faces, noting that the 21-year-old has yet to achieve a professional century. “He has not got a professional hundred yet. Go and get a professional hundred,” Hussain stated. He highlighted an upcoming match between Warwickshire and Surrey as an excellent opportunity for Bethell to test himself against a formidable bowling attack.
The former cricketer acknowledged the significance of the T20 World Cup but reiterated that traditional formats should not be overlooked. “I know there’s a T20 World Cup coming up, and the white ball stuff is hugely important. But he seems to have lost the rhythm of batting,” Hussain said. His remarks reflect a broader conversation around the balance between formats in modern cricket.
Hussain also addressed the role of national selectors and team management in prioritizing white-ball cricket. “Rob Key (team’s managing director), selectors, they often get criticised for not focusing in on white ball stuff,” he said. The challenge lies in ensuring that players like Bethell are prepared for both formats without sacrificing their development.
As of now, Jacob Bethell has played four Test matches for England, accumulating a total of 271 runs with three half-centuries. In addition, he has taken three wickets. His One Day International (ODI) record includes 317 runs from 12 matches, featuring three half-centuries and seven wickets. In T20 Internationals, he has scored 281 runs across 13 matches, along with four wickets to his name.
In first-class cricket, Bethell has participated in 25 matches, amassing 1,041 runs over 40 innings with an average of 27.39, including eight half-centuries.
The anticipation for the Ashes series is building, with the first Test set to take place at Perth Stadium on November 21, 2025. The series will consist of five matches, culminating on January 8, 2026. As England prepares for this prestigious contest, the inclusion of players like Bethell could be pivotal in determining the team’s success.
Hussain’s call to action for Bethell highlights the ongoing dialogue in cricket regarding player development and preparation, especially as key tournaments approach.
