Gambhir Backs Samson with Bold Promise Ahead of Asia Cup Opener

In a show of unwavering confidence, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has promised to support wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson regardless of his performance. During a recent video on his YouTube channel, former all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin shared an intriguing anecdote about Gambhir’s commitment. Ashwin recounted that during an interview on his series “Kutty Stories,” Samson revealed Gambhir’s assurance: “If you bat 21 times and get out for a duck, I will still pick you in the 22nd innings.”

He explained, “If Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill are opening and a wicket falls in the powerplay, Sanju will go in. But if not, he could be forced to bat lower. Once Sanju goes anywhere below No. 3, it is a bit unfair on him.”

The challenge extends to the lower order, where Ashwin noted that the finishing roles remain unclear. “You are playing with Shivam Dube to get him to finish. But Shivam Dube has also not finished a lot of games. He is not a designated finisher,” he elaborated.
