Faf du Plessis Exits IPL Mega Auction, Joins Pakistan Super League
South Africa’s former captain, Faf du Plessis, has decided to forgo participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mega auction. Instead, he will take on a new challenge in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Du Plessis announced his decision via an official statement on Instagram, following his release from the Delhi Capitals ahead of the new IPL season.
At 41 years old, du Plessis emphasized that this decision does not indicate an end to his IPL career. He expressed a desire to return to the league in future seasons. The veteran batter, known for his extensive experience in T20 cricket, previously played in the PSL from 2019 to 2021, representing teams like Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.
Reflecting on his IPL journey, du Plessis acknowledged the challenges he faced in the previous season, where he managed to score only 202 runs across nine matches with an average of 22.44. Given this performance, his release from the Delhi franchise was not unexpected.
Du Plessis Embraces New Opportunity in PSL
In his statement, du Plessis expressed deep gratitude for the experiences and friendships forged during his 14 seasons in the IPL. “After 14 seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It’s a big decision, and one that comes with a lot of gratitude when I look back,” he stated. He acknowledged the significant role the league has played in his cricketing career, highlighting the world-class teammates and passionate fans he has encountered.
“I’ve been lucky to play with amazing franchises and in front of fans whose passion is like nothing else. India has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that have shaped me as a cricketer and as a person,” he added.
Du Plessis took the opportunity to thank the coaches, teammates, support staff, and fans who have supported him throughout his IPL career. He stated, “Fourteen years is a long time, and I’m proud of what this chapter has meant to me. India has a special place in my heart, and this certainly isn’t goodbye; you’ll see me again.”
His decision to join the PSL comes as he aims to broaden his horizons and contribute to the league not only as a player but also as an ambassador. “This year, I’ve chosen to take on a new challenge and will be playing in the upcoming PSL season. It’s an exciting step for me — a chance to experience something new, to grow as a player, and to embrace a league filled with incredible talent and energy,” he remarked.
Du Plessis expressed enthusiasm about experiencing the atmosphere in Pakistan, stating, “A new country. A new environment. A new challenge. I’m looking forward to the Pakistan hospitality. See you all soon.”
Du Plessis’ IPL Career Highlights
Over his IPL career, du Plessis has accumulated impressive statistics across 154 matches, scoring 4,773 runs at an average of 35.10 and a strike rate of 135.79. His highest score in the league stands at 96. He has played for notable franchises, including Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
His standout performances include 633 runs during Chennai Super Kings’ title-winning campaign in 2021 and 730 runs in 2023, his best season while leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Du Plessis captained RCB for three seasons after joining the franchise in 2022.
As he transitions to this new chapter in the PSL, fans and cricket enthusiasts alike will be keen to see how du Plessis adapts and performs in Pakistan’s competitive cricket landscape.
