Ben Stokes Joins Elite List of All-Rounders in Test Cricket
England captain Ben Stokes achieved a significant milestone on July 26, 2023, by joining an elite group of Test all-rounders. During the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Stokes not only scored a remarkable century but also took five wickets in the first innings, securing his place among the few players with over 7,000 runs and 200 wickets in Test cricket.
Stokes became the third all-rounder to reach this prestigious benchmark, following in the footsteps of legends Garry Sobers and Jacques Kallis. Sobers, a West Indies icon, was the first player to accomplish this feat. Throughout his illustrious 20-year career, he played in 93 Tests, amassing 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, which included 26 centuries. In addition to his batting prowess, Sobers was a versatile bowler, claiming 235 wickets at an average of 34.03.
Following Sobers, Jacques Kallis emerged as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history. The South African star featured in 166 Tests, scoring 13,289 runs at an impressive average of 55.37. His record includes 45 centuries, making him the second-highest century-maker in Test cricket. Kallis also contributed significantly with the ball, taking 292 wickets at an average of 32.65.
Stokes’ recent performance in Manchester marked a crucial moment in his career. He now has 7,032 runs in 115 matches, averaging 35.69, with 14 centuries to his name. As a right-arm seamer, Stokes has also taken 229 wickets at an average of 31.63. His ability to excel in both batting and bowling has solidified his reputation as a key player for England.
In addition to joining this elite group, Stokes became the fourth England all-rounder to achieve a century and take five wickets in the same Test match, according to Cricbuzz. Furthermore, he is the fifth captain in history to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in a Test, and notably, the first English captain to accomplish this double.
Stokes’ achievement not only highlights his individual talent but also adds to the rich heritage of all-rounders in cricket. As he continues to lead England on the international stage, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how he builds on this remarkable milestone in the future.
